This policy explains how Senja: Sun Tracker & Shadows (Senja), including Senja Golden, handles information. It also covers this policy webpage and Senja's light-forecast service. For privacy questions, contact the Senja developer at derrick@lionardy.com.
Information used on your device
Solar calculations and city search run on your device. Senja does not require a Senja account. The app stores the places you select or save, their coordinates and time zones, recent-place information, preferences, reminder and widget settings, and locally cached forecast information in its private app storage.
If you choose to use your device's location and grant permission, Senja uses the approximate or precise location Android provides to select a place and calculate sunlight information. Senja does not request background-location permission or track your movements in the background. You can select cities or enter coordinates without granting location permission. Your device's location providers may process information under their own policies.
Compass, orientation and motion sensors help align the views. A skyline you trace is stored locally as a profile of horizon angles associated with the selected place, rather than as a photograph. Reminder notifications and home-screen widgets can display the place name and sunlight information on your device.
Maps
While the Map view is open, Senja downloads map styles, tiles and related map resources from OpenFreeMap using the MapLibre renderer. Requests identify the geographic area being viewed, usually around your selected place. The service and its infrastructure can also receive your IP address and ordinary connection information. Senja does not attach a Senja account or an advertising identifier to these requests.
OpenFreeMap describes its processing and retention in its privacy policy. Map resources may be cached on your device. Opening the map requires an internet connection to retrieve resources that are not already available locally.
Light forecasts
When you view Light forecast with Senja Golden, Senja requests weather data for the selected place. The coordinates are rounded to two decimal places, roughly a kilometre depending on latitude. These rounded coordinates and an app-identifying request header are sent to Senja's forecast service, hosted by Cloudflare. The selected place may be somewhere you are planning to visit rather than your current location.
The service passes the rounded coordinates to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) to retrieve weather data. It does not forward your device's IP address, a purchase token or an account identifier to MET Norway. MET Norway receives the forecast service's network connection and its identifying contact information. Forecast responses are shared between requests for the same rounded location.
Cloudflare receives your IP address and ordinary request information to deliver and protect the service. The forecast worker uses the address as a key for short-lived rate-limit counters, configured with a 60-second period. We do not enable request logging in the forecast worker or build a location-history profile. Cloudflare may separately process service and security information under its own policies.
The forecast service caches weather responses under their rounded coordinates for up to 24 hours after each write or refresh. These cache entries are not linked to a Senja account or device identifier. They may be refreshed when someone requests the same area again. Reminder notifications can use a forecast already cached on your device; they do not fetch a new forecast in the background.
See Cloudflare's privacy policy and MET Norway's API terms and privacy information.
Camera and augmented reality
If you grant camera permission, Senja uses the live camera preview to show the sun's path and, on supported devices, place virtual objects with shadows. Senja's app code does not record or upload camera photos or video. Camera access can be revoked in Android settings.
Object placement uses Google Play Services for AR (ARCore), provided by Google and governed by the Google Privacy Policy. ARCore uses camera and sensor information for tracking and understanding nearby surfaces. Google may process diagnostic and service information as described in its AR data information. Senja does not use ARCore Cloud Anchors or the Geospatial API.
Google Play purchases
Google Play processes the optional one-time Senja Golden purchase. Senja receives product identifiers, purchase status, purchase tokens and signed transaction information to verify, acknowledge and restore ownership. The app caches ownership locally for offline access and may queue a purchase token locally to retry acknowledgement. Senja does not receive your full payment-card details.
Senja's current billing implementation checks purchases on the device and with Google Play; it does not send purchase receipts or tokens to Senja's forecast service. Google's transaction and account records are governed by the Google Privacy Policy. Clearing or uninstalling Senja does not erase a Google Play transaction or request a refund.
Advertising, analytics and support
Without Senja Golden, the Map view shows one ad from Google AdMob, provided by Google. Senja requests non-personalised ads only and does not access your device's advertising ID or Android's ad-services APIs. To show the ad, measure it and prevent fraud, Google receives your IP address and basic device, app and ad-interaction information, and may use cookies or similar local storage for frequency capping and aggregated reporting, as described in how Google uses information from apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. Without Senja Golden, AdMob is started once the app's introduction is done, so an ad is ready when one is shown; with Golden it is never started. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google's consent form asks for your choice before any ad is requested, and you can change it at any time under Ad privacy choices in Senja's settings; ads stay non-personalised whatever you choose. Buying Senja Golden removes the ad.
Senja contains no developer-installed analytics or crash-reporting service. We do not sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising. Android, Google Play, ARCore and the network providers named above may process their own diagnostic, transaction or security information according to their policies and your settings.
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and any information you choose to include. We use this information to respond and resolve your request, retaining it while needed for the enquiry and follow-up or where a legal obligation requires retention. You can ask us to delete support correspondence, subject to those obligations. Do not send payment-card details or other unnecessary sensitive information.
Your choices, retention and deletion
- Use manual place selection instead of device location, and manage camera, location and notification permissions in Android settings.
- Remove saved places individually, or use Settings > Delete saved places to delete saved places and traced skylines and turn off reminders. This action does not clear every app setting, cache or purchase record.
- To remove all Senja data held locally, including preferences and caches, clear the app's storage in Android settings or uninstall it. Local data otherwise remains until you remove it, the app replaces it or Android clears a cache. Senja disables Android cloud backup and device transfer of its app data.
- There is no Senja account or developer account profile to delete. Google Play ownership can be restored through the purchasing Google account after local app data is cleared.
- Avoid Map and Light forecast if you do not want to make those network requests. Clearing local storage does not delete service providers' independently retained records or a shared forecast cache; the retention described above and the providers' own policies apply.
- Contact derrick@lionardy.com about access, correction, deletion or other privacy rights that apply to you. We may need information to verify and respond to your request. We cannot identify an individual device's use from an unlinked shared forecast cache.
Security and processing locations
Senja uses private Android app storage, Android permission controls and HTTPS for its configured map and forecast connections. Purchases use Google Play. These measures reduce risk, but no system can guarantee absolute security. Cloudflare, MET Norway, Google and map infrastructure may process information outside your country. Their linked policies describe their processing and safeguards.
This privacy webpage has no advertising, analytics scripts, forms or application cookies. Its hosting provider still receives ordinary connection information needed to serve and protect the page.
Changes and contact
We will update this page when Senja's data practices change and revise the date above. Where required, material changes will also be communicated in the app.
